Nostalgia is often marketed as a soft, hazy, and sentimental aesthetic, a retreat into a blurred past. However, Ranze Zhang’s collection, "Old School Romance," shatters this convention. For Zhang, a Parsons Paris graduate, nostalgia is not a feeling to be felt, but a structure to be engineered. By transforming a delicate narrative, the secret love story between two boys, into a series of rigid, sculptural silhouettes, Zhang performs a profound "Kültürel Teşhis" (Cultural Diagnosis) on the nature of emotion in the digital age.
EMOTION AS STRUCTURE
At the heart of "Old School Romance" lies a paradox: how can a story so fragile be told through such brutalist tailoring? Zhang’s answer lies in Material Intelligence. Instead of using traditional romantic motifs like floral patterns or fluid silks, he employs recycled materials and complex, architectural seams. This is the "Structure of Romance."
